International Children Assistance Network

International Children Assistance Network (ICAN) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Milpitas, CA, dedicated to empowering Vietnamese-American families and communities through comprehensive, culturally responsive programs. Since its founding in 2000 by three Vietnamese refugees, ICAN has developed a robust service model addressing critical needs across multiple life stages. The organization delivers specialized Early Childhood Programs designed to build foundational skills and confidence in young learners, Youth and Young Adults Programs that foster leadership development and civic engagement, and Family and Community Programs that strengthen intergenerational connections and support networks. ICAN's approach integrates three core pillars: humanitarian initiatives that address immediate community needs, culturally responsive social programs that honor Vietnamese-American heritage while addressing contemporary challenges, and community-based research that generates evidence for effective interventions. The organization's Family Resource Center provides direct support and education on topics often considered sensitive within the Asian-American community, including mental health, family dynamics, and cultural integration. ICAN's work extends to partnerships with major research institutions including UCSF and UC Davis, contributing to groundbreaking studies on war trauma and aging in Vietnamese refugee populations.
